Te Rapu

Our process

We have developed a unique process to gather and share the koorero of our people in a by Maaori, for Maaori way that upholds the mana of those stories throughout the entire research process.​​

  • 1. Te Rapu
    Collection of stories Our people's stories, told by them, their way. The word 'rapu' creates a sense of searching and discovery - a journey to seek the truth and evidence that already exists through the stories of the people.
  • 2. Te Tuhinga
    Transcription of stories Our people's stories will be transcribed to allow for in depth analysis, peer review and interrogation.​
  • 3. Te Taataritanga
    Data analysis The transcribed stories will be analysed, interpreted, and visualised in certain ways to allow for the following processes of the alcohol harm research.
  • 4. Te Arotake Aropoaa
    Peer review Te Taataritanga will be reviewed by a peer reviewer to ensure that only quality, factual work is published and contributes to the advancement of knowledge in ways to reduce alcohol harm to Maaori. This maintains the credibility of our kaupapa.
  • 5. Whaaia te Whare Tapa Whaa
    Reflective analysis Viewing the stories through an Ao Maaori lens using Te Whare Tapa Whaa.
  • 6. Maataihia te Kaupapa
    Policy interrogation Includes a review of current policy settings, compared with the findings of the Maaori health needs assessment to develop policy by Maaori for Maaori aimed at reducing alochol-related harm.
  • 7. Titiro ki te Whakaaweawe o te Oohanga
    Economic impact analysis An economic impact analysis is a crucial step in providing insights and recommendations for policy changes or interventions. The Government is unlikely to make any changes if they are not financially viable.
  • 8. Te Whakatika Maaori
    By Maaori, for Maaori solutions paper This paper will actively drive actionable change, informing the Government how Maaori affected by waipiro harm believe the issues can begin to be addressed. The gaps between research stories and implementation are eliminated.
